I forgot to take a picture of the main dish, duck hot pot, but it is an amazingly delicious hot pot dish. 🎵
The winter cold in the Norikura Highlands is extremely severe.

This is a post for English users.
After finishing the climing up Jukkokuyama,
I arrived at the Hot Spring Inn(Onsen Ryokan in Japanese)
in Norikura Highlands. When I entered the entrance and called out, I was greeted with a cheerful voice. 😊
Sounds like we had a warm welcome after an adventurous hike! 🌄🏞️
After receiving a comprehensive explanation about the location of
the facilities and the usage rules within the ryokan,
I entered my room. It was a cozy 6-tatami-mat room
named 'Komadori' (Japanese Robin).
After unpacking my belongings from my backpack, I took my yukata and towel and headed to the onsen I had my eye on.
First, I washed off the sweat from hiking in the indoor bath🌸♨️🛁
There was another person in the onsen,
but it seemed he was just leaving,
so I had the place all to myself.
The spacious bathtub was about the size of 2 tatami mats,
and the entire area of onsen was around 6 tatami mats.
There was some boards placed over the bathtub,
and I had to slide them aside when entering.
The water temperature was neither too hot nor too cold.
it was just right for a long soak.
The water was slightly milky and had a smooth, pleasant texture.
It sounds like the onsen provided the perfect setting
for relaxation with its ideal temperature and soothing water.🌸♨️
It helps ease some post-hike soreness.
After soaking for a while, my skin started to feel smooth.
What a wonderful experience! 🌸♨️
After leaving the indoor bath, I headed to the open-air bath.
By placing a yellow chain,
it indicated that it was in use and became private.
The usage time was 20 to 30 minutes.
I walked down the dimly lit pathway. When I opened the door,
I found a bathtub of the same size as the indoor one.
Just like before, I slid the board placed over the bathtub to get in.
In the changing room, I took off my yukata,
performed the kake-yu ritual (pouring warm water over the body to acclimate), and entered the bath.
The water temperature was the same comfortable level
as the indoor bath.
Looking up, I could see vibrant autumn leaves right in front of me,
capturing the essence of the season.
The winter season would probably be beautiful too.
I slowly warmed up and thoroughly enjoyed the onsen(#^.^#)
I returned to my room and used the short time
before the 6 PM dinner to organize my data.
I had taken a lot of photos, so it was important to organize them
properly to avoid trouble later.
Dinner at 6:00 PM started with apple wine as an aperitif.
There was salmon, pork, various dressed dishes, and yogurt.
The main dish was duck hot pot. Since I had been active all day,
I was very hungry and ate heartily.
I haven't had any alcohol this year, but today I decided to enjoy
myself and had a second beer.🍻✨ It was truly delicious. 😊
I added beaten egg and green onions to the duck broth
to make zosui.
In the end, I ate five bowls of rice,
and the rice container was empty.
I thoroughly enjoyed Japanese food and was very satisfied!! 😊
I couldn't let any of the food go to waste and ate everything
that was served. It was absolutely delicious!!
After dinner, I took a short rest in my room
before heading back to the onsen.
Although I probably should have refrained from soaking
after drinking,
I felt energetic and could even jump down the stairs
(though in reality, I held onto the handrail while descending).
I performed the kake-yu ritual and soaked in the indoor bath.
The warmth permeated my entire body.
It was truly a luxurious moment.🌸♨️
After spending some time here, I tried to enter the open-air bath,
but unfortunately, it was in use.
Since there was already someone waiting,
I decided to try again the next morning and returned to my room.
Remembering to ask the ryokan staff for something,
I went downstairs. I called out and made the following request.
Since I overate at dinner, I requested that the amount of rice
for breakfast be reduced a little.
I wanted to post details about the ryokan on the internet.
I asked if we could take a photo together in front of the entrance after checkout.
All of these requests were gladly accepted. 😊
Returning to my room, I resumed organizing my data a bit more,
but I succumbed to drowsiness and seem to have fallen asleep
soundly by around 9 PM.
I woke up at 6:30 the next morning. As planned the previous night, I headed to the open-air bath.
Fortunately, there were no other users.
I leisurely soaked in the bath, watching the autumn leaves
become even more vibrant in the morning sunlight.
In the end, I bathed five times,
including both the indoor and open-air baths. After bathing,
I spent time taking photos of the inside and outside
of the inn until breakfast at 7:30.
Breakfast included tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette),
shishamo (grilled smelt), nori (seaweed), various dressed dishes,
pickles, tororo (grated yam), and miso soup.
As requested, the amount of rice was reduced to about two bowls.
I enjoyed it all, adding tororo or making ochazuke (rice with tea)
with the rice. Everything was delicious!🍚🍵🍱
After breakfast, I returned to my room, tidied up before departure, and took some photos that I hadn't managed to capture earlier.📸✨
A little after 9 AM, I checked out.
I received a large 'Shinano Gold' apple.
I took a photo in front of the ryokan's entrance,
setting up my smartphone on a tripod. The timer was very helpful.
The onsen was soothing with its perfect temperature,
and the food was delicious and plentiful.
I would recommend this ryokan not just for hikers but for anyone.
I definitely want to use it again the next time I visit this area.😊✨
I was sent off with a wave from the entrance upon departure.
Thank you very much for the warm and homely hospitality. 😊
I departed from the ryokan and headed for a stroll
around Norikura Highlands, aiming for Sanbondaki Falls by car.
I decided to stop by Zengoro Falls along the way.
From the parking lot, I could see a beautiful view of Mount Norikura. It looks like it’s going to be another clear and sunny day.
It's a little less than a kilometer to Zengoro Falls,
with a slightly descending path.
The path is covered with fallen leaves
and has occasional small muddy spots.
There are also numerous signs warning about bears.
I arrived at the waterfall.
It was much wider and had a larger volume of water cascading
down than I had expected.
The mist was so intense that even though
I was some distance from the waterfall, my entire body got wet.
Next, I went to Sanbondaki Falls parking lot.
This is the starting point for climbing Mount Norikura
in the snow season.
I remembered how tough it was to climb the steep ski slope
from here.
I ascended while seeing the traces of avalanches beside me.
I walked for about 20 minutes along the trail
leading to Sanbondaki Falls.
Volunteers were maintaining the trail.
As I got closer to the falls, there were more rocks and mud.
I was glad to be wearing hiking boots.
There are particularly many bear 🐻sightings
in the Norikura Highlands,
so there are metal objects🔔to bang on as bear deterrents along
all the trekking routes.
I tried banging them, but they don't make a very loud sound.
I wonder if this is enough? Can animals hear it?"
I always carry a bell with me, so I walked while ringing it.
Since it's the season before hibernation and bears are more active,
I need to be more cautious than usual.
There was also a broad waterfall in front of Sanbondaki Falls
with a large volume of water flowing down.
Upon reaching Sanbondaki Falls,
I saw that three waterfalls of different sizes were flowing
in different directions. It seems the name was derived from this.
Each waterfall had its own unique charm when I got closer.
The most impressive was the one on the right
with a large volume of water,
and it looked like I could get very close.
Since I was wearing hiking boots,
I was able to wade through the water and get right up next to it.
The other two waterfalls were farther away,
so I could only view them from a top a rock.
I decided to take the route through the Norikura Super Forest Road towards Kiso Village on my way back.
I remembered this road well because I used to pass through it
frequently when I was touring on my motorcycle.
I took some photos of Mount Norikura from Ichinose Enchi
along the way, as the view was beautiful.
Gradually increasing in altitude,
I also took photos of Mount Norikura from a scenic spot
on the forest road. Although it wasn't planned,
I had an excellent trek and autumn foliage viewing.
"I entered Kiso Village from Nagawa.
When I got hungry, I found a soba restaurant just in time.
I had a large serving of kakiage soba.🍜
It had a lot of tempura in it. 🍤
The soba was very filling, and I was full.
"On the way back, I felt a little sleepy,
so I took a 30-minute nap at a roadside station on Route 19.
Taking a nap when feeling drowsy is effective.
After that, I was able to drive non-stop for about 100 kilometers
without feeling sleepy.😊🚗
My two-day trip of hiking🌄, hot springs♨️, and autumn foliage 🍁
was blessed with good weather and warm encounters with people.
It became a fulfilling and memorable experience.
Thank you very much.😊
