There really weren't any dangerous areas but the rain made the path a bit muddy for the first and final 2km or so. |
その他周辺情報 | Along the hike there are several places to get water so it is a good idea not to over fill your water bottles/hydration bag. There are two huts along the climb that are staffed and one emergency hut at the peak. |

感想
We had a later start than we had wanted but we were all in good spirits for the climb. The long drive from Kofu to 丹波山村 gave us plenty of time to have good conversation.
Finding the parking area was a little bit difficult because the road was quite hard to find and VERY narrow. Also, the road was covered with fallen chestnuts so (マロン・栗).
Because this was a weekday, the parking area wasn't full at all by the time we arrived. We changed clothes and prepared our gear for the climb. At first we put
on full rain gear but found that after the first 45 minutes, it was a little to hot to have our jackets on. It was a good thing that we kept on our rain covers for
our backpacks because the rain kept coming.
One of the funniest things we saw during the ascent was an older man (probably in his late 60s) pass us carrying a broken umbrella and a small radio. We are
all in pretty good shape and were moving at a good pace but this man made it
seem like we were crawling up the mountain. It was impressive!
The weather was cooler so none of us drank as much water as we normally do which allowed our packs to be a little bit lighter for the long climb.
For the first 5km of the climb there were signboards at regular intervals describing the history of the path and various natural landmarks that held some historical significance.
It was surprising to reach a large plateau area so flat that you could drive a small car on it. As we moved past the 奥多摩小屋(おくたまごや) the ascent quickly steepened, the rain started to fall again, and there was a sharp drop in temperature. We reached the summit and quickly made our way into the emergency shelter for a lunch break. There was quite a large group of people with the same idea.
I'll never forget a conversation that we had with another climber. Everyone in the hut agreed that the weather today was really bad. One of the climbers in my group said, 「今日の山が雲取らないですね」. We all laughed but one of the other climbers was so impressed by the joke that he continued to laugh about it even as he was exiting the hut.
We started our descent down the mountain and I think I was little overconfident. I slipped and fell because I was moving to quickly down the mountain but, thankfully, didn't rip my jacket on rocks.
The muddy path before had turned into what looked like a small river which we had to walk through. It made our climb down much slower than it might have been if it was a dry day.
We arrived back at the parking area and were quite happy to arrive at the のめこい湯。I highly recommend the onsen. The walk up to building crosses the river which was quite peaceful.
Good friends and good conversation made up for this bad weather hike.
